This book really needs to be read in conjunction with the next in the series to really appreciate what the author is doing with these characters. If you're judging books by how "nice" the people are, then you'll be disappointed. But E.E. writes characters with flaws and weaknesses. Their main problem is that they despecrately want love, but don't always go about finding it the best way. A bit like real life really, which is what the series is called.
Highly recommeneded as long as both books are read to gain a true picture.
